Project Title | Getting to Know Integers |
Grade/Subject Area | Sixth Grade Math |
Measurable Learning Objective(s) | At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to identify different types of triangles, including equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right, acute, and oblique triangles. To achieve this, the teacher will distribute copies of each type of triangle to the class. The class will then be divided into four groups, and each group will have five minutes to examine the shapes at their seats. Afterward, each group will present each type of triangle to the class, and in addition to the presentation, they will also provide an example of where one might observe each type of triangle causing them to think creatively. For instance, when presenting a right triangle, a group might point out that one of the corners of the classroom forms a 'right triangle.' |
Curriculum Standard or Course Learning Objective | Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) 6.8(A) extend previous knowledge of triangles and their properties to include the sum of angles of a triangle, the relationship between the lengths of sides and measures of angles in a triangle, and determining when three lengths form a triangle |
Technology and Creativity | Each group will also have access to the Smart Board at the front of the room to illustrate their findings by drawing pictures in front of the class. |
This promotes creativity by encouraging students to collaborate and explore how real-life elements (idea generation) can be represented by different geometric shapes, such as a ski slope representing a scalene or oblique triangle. |
Project Structure
Key Stages (select one or create your own) | Time Allocation | Description |
Introduction | One 45-Minute Class | Teacher will provide a quick overview of various shapes, with illustrations of everyday shapes encountered in rooms, buildings, cars, ski slopes, and more (project direction). |
Outline of Presentation | 15 Minutes | The teacher will start by giving a quick overview of various shapes, using illustrations of everyday shapes encountered in rooms, buildings, cars, ski slopes, and more. Then, the teacher will distribute copies of the shapes discussed. The class will be divided into four groups by assigning each student a number 1, 2, 3, or 4 around the room. |
| 15 Minutes | The groups will start by studying different shapes and creatively imagining where these shapes can be found in their daily routines. Then, they will gather at the front of the class and use the smart board and handouts to illustrate their ideas. |
| 15-Each group will have just a couple of minutes each. | Each group will present the shapes they have discovered in their daily routines at the front of the class. |
